Authorities Investigating Fatal Bakersfield Bicycle Accident at Union Avenue and Columbus Street
Bakersfield, California (March 11, 2020) – One person died following a bicycle collision that happened at the intersection of Union Avenue and Columbus Street in Bakersfield at about11:41 a.m. Tuesday.
The accident began when a male party driving his car westbound on Columbus Street, approaching Union Avenue, made an unexpected move to avoid traffic as he entered the intersection against a red light.
The driver then went onto the sidewalk, where he struck the cyclist who was waiting at the corner. Officials said the motorist fell asleep and then woke up at the time of the collision.
Another car crashed with the rear of the involved vehicle upon the impact. The involved driver stopped after the wreck and cooperated with the law.
Sadly, the unidentified bicyclist was declared deceased at the crash site.
The accident remains under an active investigation.
