Yuan Zhang Hospitalized after Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on 10 Freeway near Holt Avenue in West Covina
West Covina, California (January 1, 2019) – Yuan Zhang, 37, of Chino Hills, was injured Monday evening in a multi-car accident that also left one man dead on the 10 Freeway in West Covina, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal accident took place at around 5:49 p.m. Monday, December 30 on the westbound 10 Freeway, just east of Holt Avenue.
According to a report by the CHP, Amado Santos, 60, of Sun Valley, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Express van at approximately 60 mph in the No. 2 lane when for an unknown reason, he slammed into the rear of a 2014 Smart car operated by Zhang.
The Smart car was pushed into a 2008 Chrysler Aspen driven by Jorge Vidana, 43, of La Puente, which then crashed into the rear of a Kia Stinger sedan operated by Jaynene Owens, 40, of Covina.
A 28-year-old San Dimas man who was riding as a passenger in the Smart car was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries. His name has not been disclosed pending notification of family.
Zhang sustained blunt force trauma injury and was also transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.
Santos suffered facial injuries. Vidana had pain in his shoulder, leg and back and was transported to Emanate Health Foothill Presbyterian Hospital.
Owens complained of shoulder, neck and back pain while her passenger, a 69-year-old Covina woman, had pain in her head, neck and back. Both were transported to a hospital for treatment.
As of 6:12 p.m., all lanes of the westbound 10 Freeway were closed. They were reopened three hours later.
