Young Service Member from Utah Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 5 near Las Flores Drive Off-Ramp in Carlsbad
San Diego, California (January 14, 2020) - According to the California Highway Patrol, a young military service member from Utah and an alleged wrong-way motorist were killed early Tuesday morning in head-on crash in Carlsbad.
The deadly accident took place at about 12:00 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5 near the Las Flores Drive off-ramp.
The incident began when police officers were trying to stop a black truck for a traffic violation, but the driver sped away. The driver reportedly entered the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 traveling southbound.
Minutes later, the black truck collided head-on with a silver sedan.
The sedan driver, a man who is believed to be a 19-year-old military service member from Utah, was killed in the crash.
The wrong-way driver, a 42-year-old San Diego man, also died in the crash. A 35-year-old San Diego man, who was riding as a passenger in the black truck, sustained major injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
It remains unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
Authorities closed northbound Interstate 5 near Las Flores Drive during the investigation. Drivers were diverted onto the Carlsbad Village Drive off-ramp.
All lanes reopened to traffic at 5:45 a.m.
The accident remains under investigation.
