Bakersfield, California (January 9, 2020) – 9-year-old Emiliano Hernandez of Bakersfield has been identified as the child killed in a multi-vehicle crash that led to the arrest of Evaristo Perez Nunez, 32, in South Bakersfield early Tuesday morning.
According to a local news source, the accident took place at around 3:34 a.m. Tuesday, January 7 at the intersection of Cottonwood Road and East Pacheco Road.
Authorities said a car was heading southbound on Cottonwood Road when, for undetermined reasons, a pickup truck driven by Nunez pulled out in front of the car from East Pacheco Road, leading to the crash.
The car was then hit by a third vehicle that was also heading south on Cottonwood Road.
Four children who were riding in the first car sustained moderate-to-major injuries. The children, two of them 9 years old, and the others, 3 and 12 years old, were all transported to a nearby hospital, where Hernandez later succumbed to his injuries.
Two adults in the first car complained of pain and were also transported to the hospital.
The driver of the third vehicle stopped at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
Nunez abandoned his pickup truck and fled the scene on foot. He was later located but he resisted arrest and injured an officer.
Nunez was restrained and booked into the Kern County jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, driving without a license, driving without insurance, right-of-way violation and possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle. He faces an additional charge of vehicular manslaughter.
