Valley Village, California (January 13, 2020) – The off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detective who was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday morning in Valley Village has been identified as Amber Joy Leist, 41.

The accident occurred at around 11:05 a.m. Sunday, January 12 in the area of Riverside Drive and Whitsett Avenue.

Authorities said Leist, a 12-year veteran of the department assigned to the West Hollywood Station, was driving through the intersection when she stopped and got out of her vehicle to help a pedestrian who fell to the ground get safely to the sidewalk.

Leist was then hit by a vehicle that was heading eastbound on Riverside Drive while she was returning to her car.

Leist was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle involved stopped at the scene and cooperated with the authorities.

The accident remains under investigation.
