9-Year-Old Child Dies, Five Injured in Bakersfield Car Crash at Cottonwood Road and East Pacheco Road; Evaristo Nunez Arrested
Bakersfield, California (January 8, 2020) – Evaristo Perez Nunez, 32, was arrested following a multi-vehicle crash that left a 9-year-old child dead and injured several other people in South Bakersfield early Tuesday morning.
The accident took place at around 3:34 a.m. Tuesday, January 7 at the intersection of Cottonwood Road and East Pacheco Road.
Authorities said a car was heading southbound on Cottonwood Road when for undetermined reasons, a pickup truck, driven by Nunez, pulled out in front of the car from East Pacheco Road and caused the crash.
The car was then hit by a third vehicle that was also heading southbound on Cottonwood Road.
Four children who were riding in the first car sustained moderate to major injuries. All four children, two of them 9 years old, the others 3 and 12 years old, were transported to a nearby hospital, where later one 9-year-old child died.
Two adults in the first car complained of pain and were also transported to the hospital.
The driver of the third vehicle stopped at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
Nunez abandoned his pickup truck and fled the scene on foot. Nunez was later located, but he resisted arrest and injured an officer.
Nunez was restrained and booked into the Kern County jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, driving without a license, driving without insurance, right-of-way violation and possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
Nunez was scheduled to go to court on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. Authorities said he will now face an additional charge of vehicular manslaughter.
The accident remains under investigation.
