Mary Corral among 2 Pedestrians Killed in Goleta Crash on Cathedral Oaks Road near Ellwood Ridge Road
Goleta, California (February 10, 2020) – Mary Jane Becerra Corral, 44, of Goleta, was among two pedestrians killed Sunday evening in an alleged hit-and-run crash in western Goleta
The deadly accident happened at around 5:15 p.m. Sunday, February 9 on Cathedral Oaks Road, just east of Ellwood Ridge Road, to the west of Brandon Drive and less than a mile north of Calle Real.
Authorities said the two pedestrians were apparently walking on the bike lane on the north side of Cathedral Oaks Road when they were hit by a blue Nissan 370Z Roadster convertible that was traveling westbound.
Corral was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The other pedestrian was declared dead at the scene.
The driver of the Nissan did stop to render aid and fled the scene on foot. The suspected hit-and-run motorist was located at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, riding as a passenger in a vehicle.
The vehicle was stopped and the suspect, identified as Eric Mauricio Ramirez Aguilar, 39, of Goleta, was arrested. The driver of that vehicle was determined not to be involved in the hit-and-run crash and was not arrested.
Aguilar was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.
The accident remains under investigation.
A person on foot is no match for a vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death. “Due to the incredibly serious nature of these types of injuries, pedestrian accident cases often require special care in order to help ensure victims receive the full compensation they need for extensive medical bills, ongoing rehabilitation therapy, in-home care, lost past and future earnings, and numerous other economic and non-economic damages”, Said Arin Khodaverdian, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.
Arin noted that pedestrians, in most instances, have the right-of-way when crossing a street or an intersection. According to Arin, to properly investigate a pedestrian crash and prove negligence, enough resources are required. “A skilled attorney has the resources and will help investigate the accident to determine the party at fault,” Arin said
