Lake Tulloch, California (April 28, 2020) – Authorities have identified the motorcyclist who was died Saturday afternoon in a traffic accident near Lake Tulloch in Calaveras County as Charles Brechtel, 62, of Copperopolis.

The deadly head-on crash took place at around 5:50 p.m. Saturday, April 25, on O’Byrnes Ferry Road, just south of Duchess Drive between Highway 4 and Highway 120.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Brechtel was riding a 1987 Harley Davidson northbound on O’Byrnes Ferry when he drifted across the double yellow lines into the southbound lane where he collided head-on with a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox.

Brechtel, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected from his bike upon the impact. He died at the scene, authorities said.

The Chevrolet’s driver, Briana Mason, 29, of Davis, and her passenger, Evan Gorder, 29, of Davis, were not injured in the crash. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

The CHP said neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.
