Pilot Killed in Mountain Center Plane Accident near Bautista Road
Mountain Center, California (April 30, 2020) – Authorities are investigating a Thursday afternoon plane crash that killed a pilot in Mountain Center.
The crash happened at around 12:40 p.m. near Bautista Road, within sight of the Bautista Conservation Camp in the San Bernardino National Forest.
A Piper Aztec, a vintage model double-engine plane that seats four to six people, crashed along a jagged ridgeline in unclear circumstances, according to the FAA.
The pilot was declared dead at the crash site. The pilot was the only occupant in the plane at the time of the crash.
The plane was reportedly on fire due to the crash, but the fire was fully contained by 3:00 p.m.
The nearest airport from the crash site is Hemet-Ryan, but it was not clear if the aircraft was flying to or from the airport.
An investigation into the crash by the Federal Aviation Administration is ongoing.
